Spaying or neutering can be done around 4-6 months of age. All pets are required to have a complete physical exam and pre-anesthetic blood work prior to surgery. This ensures that they are healthy enough to undergo a surgical procedure. We also require vaccinations to be current before surgery will be performed.
At Advanced PetCare of Oakland we perform a blood test to check organ function, blood counts, and clotting function prior to surgery. Knowledge of your pet’s condition helps to minimize risks associated with anesthesia or post-operative complications.
If your pet’s procedure requires sutures, these will be removed approximately 10-14 days after the surgery.
There are no advantages to letting your pet have a litter, but there are many advantages to spaying and neutering. These benefits include:

Yes, we board cats and other small animals during regular business hours. For dog boarding, we recommend Camp Bow Wow, which is located right next to our hospital.
Our cat boarders are kept in an area separate from any dogs or sick patients that enter our hospital. They are provided blankets, food, water, and litter. However, you are always welcome to bring your own if it makes your kitty feel more at home. Our cat guests are boarded in a dual-level condo with a window, and a separate room for their litter.
